Carbon Foam is an ideal material for use in insulated, high temperature applications due to its low density, high thermal conductivity, high surface area, and open celled structure.
Carbon Foam has advantages that other materials do not have when exposed to extreme temperatures – one of which is insulation. Carbon foam can withstand high temperature insulation applications up to 3000º C. It’s dimensional stability over increased and prolonged exposure to heat makes it a very desirable material for many functions.
Carbon foam is an ideal material for thermal management applications. Studies show that the overall heat transfer coefficients of carbon foam-based heat sinks are up to two orders of magnitude greater than those of conventional heat sinks.
The insulation advantages of carbon foam include it’s 3-D material. The structural network allows it to be lightweight and adjustable to thermal and electrical properties, more so than 2-D materials such as graphene sheets and biomass.
